Types Of Performance Tests (Backend, And Functional): An Overview

Performance testing, when broken down into its two key parts, includes both Backend Testing and Functional Testing. While some tests may be more pertinent to your particular needs, both testing methodologies can drastically optimize a website's performance.

Backend Testing

We've dedicated an entire section in this guide to backend testing; however, at this stage it's important to know that backend testing relates to tasks like testing the code base for bugs and performance, testing the network capacity, and the architecture of an application.

Particularly, this type of test includes:

While this guide primarily focuses on Backend Testing, we will shed some light, albeit briefly, on functional testing both below, and later on in this guide.

Functional Testing

Functional testing relates to tasks like responsiveness, browser layout and user experience.

There are many different types of performance tests for each of these two areas, as well as many industry terms used to describe them. Understanding these industry terms and the goal of the different tests can help you understand and describe the types of tests you will be running.

Some functional tests include:

Again, there will be further sections regarding functional testing; however, we will only be focusing on them briefly. The remainder of this guide, excluding the section on Functional Testing, will be focusing on Backend Testing, and the tools associated with it.
